“Alamogordo Police Officer Anthony Ferguson Dies in Line of Duty”

Alamogordo Police Officer Anthony Ferguson tragically lost his life on July 15, 2023, while on duty. The 41-year-old officer was a dedicated 11-year veteran of the Alamogordo Police Department.

The incident occurred when officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle in the early hours of Saturday morning. The driver of the vehicle did not comply with the officers’ instructions and attempted to flee. While officers did not pursue the vehicle, they later located it after it was involved in a crash. At this point, a man named Dominic De La O was seen fleeing the scene on foot, prompting officers to give chase. During the pursuit, shots were fired, and both Officer Ferguson and the suspect were injured.

Officer Ferguson was initially taken to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, but due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was flown to University Medical Center of El Paso, where he later succumbed to his wounds. The suspect, De La O, was also injured but his injuries were not life-threatening. He has been arrested and is facing multiple charges, including attempt to commit first-degree murder and aggravated battery on a police officer with a deadly weapon.

Officer Ferguson was described as a beloved member of the community and a respected officer. He served as a field training officer in the Patrol Division and leaves behind his mother, father, four brothers, daughter, and son.

The incident is currently under investigation by the New Mexico State Police. The Alamogordo Police Chief, David Kunihiro, will hold a news conference to provide further details on the case.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face daily while working to protect their communities.
