The remains of a Texas-born World War II pilot have been returned to the Lone Star State for burial. Second Lt. David Murrell Lewis served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Forces and tragically died in action when his aircraft crashed on August 1, 1943.
Lewis’ aircraft crashed in Romania during Operation Tidal Wave, a mission aimed at impeding the Axis powers’ access to oil-based fuel by bombing refineries. He was only 20 years old at the time and died just days before his 21st birthday. Lewis had volunteered for service on January 8, 1942.

After years of searching, Lewis’ remains were finally identified on May 11, 2022, through the work of the Army’s Mortuary Affairs service. His closest living relative, Vivian Dennis-Monzingo, expressed her emotions upon receiving the news, stating, “It’s hard to describe the emotions. Welcome home, and then I wish all the families could say that because we still have ones missing.”
Lewis’ burial took place in Saltillo, Texas, with his family and supporters present during a procession when his remains arrived at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. A funeral service was also held in Sulphur Springs, where he was laid to rest.
The return of Lt. David Murrell Lewis’ remains serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by brave men and women during World War II.
