The Mumbai traffic police have identified the first site on their list of 121 fatal accident spots for crash analysis. Located on the Eastern Freeway, the northbound road towards Govandi-Panjrapole outside Shivaji Nagar Dargah was the site of a tragic accident on May 30. A 45-year-old man and a 55-year-old passenger were hit by a taxi, resulting in their deaths. The taxi driver, Mohammed Sharif Musahib Ali Shaikh, was arrested on charges of causing death due to negligence.
After analyzing the crash, the traffic police team discovered several issues at the accident site. The boundary wall of the freeway was only 2.5 feet, allowing pedestrians to cross the road and jump on the freeway to catch taxis. Additionally, there were no signboards indicating no stopping or no halting for taxis, and no speed breakers were present.

Based on these findings, the traffic police have written to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to increase the height of the boundary wall to five feet. They have also requested the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to install signboards and speed control measures like rumblers.
In an effort to prevent further accidents, the traffic police have formed a team to visit each of the 121 fatal accident spots and conduct crash analyses. The team will assess various factors including road width and length, point of collision, distance between vehicles, ongoing infrastructure projects, and road conditions. Based on their findings, they will prepare a detailed report and recommend necessary changes or additions, such as posting staff or installing traffic signals.
The joint commissioner of police (Traffic), Pravin Padwal, highlighted the seriousness of the situation, stating that 132 people have died in 121 fatal accidents in Mumbai until June this year. The crash analysis team aims to identify the causes of these accidents and implement measures to prevent future tragedies..
