A North Texas woman was recently recognized for her heroic actions during a deadly mass shooting at Allen Premium Outlets. Gicela Aleman, a nurse from Richardson, was honored at the U.S. Capitol for saving the life of one of the shooting victims.

On May 6, a heavily armed shooter opened fire at the outlet mall, killing eight people, including three children. Aleman happened to arrive at the mall moments after the shooter was killed, but she was unaware of the tragedy that had unfolded. She saw a wounded woman on the floor and immediately sprang into action.

As a nurse, Aleman knew how to stabilize the woman and slow the bleeding. She then drove the woman, later identified as Preeti Patel, to a nearby hospital for treatment. It wasn’t until Aleman left the mall and saw the crime scene that she fully realized the magnitude of what had just occurred.

Representative Colin Allred praised Aleman as a hero and credited her with Patel’s survival. He acknowledged that Aleman and her daughter should never have had to be heroes that day, but their actions represented the best of North Texas.

Aleman has remained in contact with Patel since the shooting and even reunited with her on Mother’s Day. Reflecting on the event, Aleman expressed that she saw a lot of humanity that day, with many people running to help and make a difference.

The recognition of Aleman’s heroism serves as a reminder of the resilience and compassion that can arise in the face of tragedy. It highlights the importance of community and the willingness of individuals to step up and help others in times of need.

As we reflect on this act of heroism, let us remember the countless individuals who go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of others. Their selflessness and bravery inspire us all to be better and to always be ready to lend a helping hand..
