“Child in British Columbia Eats Poisonous Mushroom: Health Officials Issue Warning”

Health officials in southwestern British Columbia have issued a warning about a potentially deadly poisonous mushroom after a young child ate part of one. The Ministry of Health stated that toxic death cap mushrooms have been appearing early in urban areas. Fortunately, the child who consumed the mushroom only ate a small part and is now recovering.

Death cap mushrooms, scientifically known as Amanita phalloides, are not native to British Columbia and are believed to have come to the province on the roots of residential street trees. These mushrooms typically surface during wetter fall months but can also appear in the summer, especially in areas that are regularly watered.

The mushrooms contain toxins that target the liver and kidneys, leading to symptoms such as cramping, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration within six to 12 hours of ingestion. After 24 hours, the exposed person may start to feel better, but the toxins continue to cause damage to vital organs. A second wave of symptoms can occur within 72 hours, resulting in severe illness, organ failure, and even death.

Health officials are advising people to collect and dispose of any mushrooms found on the ground in areas where children may play. They are also reminding the public never to consume mushrooms that have not been properly identified as edible.

If someone consumes part of an unknown wild mushroom, it is recommended to collect the entire mushroom, including its base, or take detailed photos of it. In case of mushroom poisoning, it is crucial to contact poison control immediately at 1-800-567-8911.
