Kelvin Ortiz, a man who was shot during an interaction with Bayonne police, has now been arrested. The incident began in Bayonne and ended in Jersey City’s Greenville neighborhood. The Bayonne Police Department received a report of a theft from a gas station, and officers found Ortiz in a Burger King parking lot nearby. When police approached him, Ortiz fled in his car and struck two police cars and an unoccupied private automobile. One police officer fired his weapon during the incident.
Ortiz was later found in Jersey City, reportedly conscious, alert, and breathing despite being shot in the face. Officers at the scene were instructed to ensure their body cameras were turned on, indicating the seriousness of the incident. Ortiz was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he is currently in custody with non-life-threatening injuries.

He is now facing charges of eluding, four counts of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon (vehicle), and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose (vehicle). The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General has been notified, and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office shooting Response Team and Major Crimes Unit are actively investigating the matter.
