A tragic hit-and-run incident occurred on Monday evening in Gould City, resulting in the death of a Crystal Falls man. The incident took place on U.S. 2 near Milakokia Lake Road in Newton Township. According to the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office, a westbound pickup truck overtook another vehicle at a high speed and collided with a pedestrian who was legally parked on the shoulder of the highway.

The pedestrian, identified as Douglas Raymond Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck did not stop and continued driving for several miles before eventually pulling over. Off-duty police officers who witnessed the crash followed the suspect and detained him until local law enforcement arrived. The suspect, Eric Thomas Gilmour from Grand Blanc, was arrested and taken to Mackinac Straits Hospital for treatment before being lodged in the Mackinac County Jail. He has been charged with a $500,000 bond.

Preliminary investigations suggest that alcohol and speed were contributing factors to the incident. The Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Michigan State Police accident investigators, are still investigating the crash.

The scene was attended by several emergency response teams, including Newton Township Fire, Garfield Township Fire, Portage Township EMS, and the Michigan Department of Transportation, in addition to MSP troopers from the St. Ignace and Sault Ste. Marie posts and the MSP Manistique Outpost.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the devastating consequences that can result from reckless behavior behind the wheel. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of Douglas Raymond Jr. during this difficult time..
