(CNN) — Law enforcement officials from the New York Police Department have arrested and charged a 15-year-old as an adult following an incident in Times Square where he shot and injured a Brazilian tourist. The teenager, identified as a migrant from Venezuela who entered the United States in September last year, is now facing multiple charges including attempted second-degree murder, attempted first-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and second-degree assault.

The New York City detectives and US Marshals successfully apprehended the teenager in Yonkers on Friday. They were able to track him down by following a potential family connection in the area. The shooting took place at JD Sports, a popular sneaker store in Times Square. Videos obtained by CNN reveal that the incident began when a store security guard approached the teenager and asked him to present a receipt for a jacket he had in his bag.

According to authorities, the suspect reacted by reaching into his coat for a gun and firing a shot at the security guard. However, the bullet struck a 37-year-old woman who happened to be visiting New York from Brazil. The situation escalated further when the teenager fled the scene, leading the police on a half-mile foot chase through Times Square.

During the chase, the suspect fired two shots at the pursuing officer. Despite the threat, the officer displayed remarkable restraint and did not return fire due to the crowded streets filled with pedestrians. “Our cops showed great restraint not to fire their weapon into crowded New Yorkers,” stated NYPD’s Chief of Patrol John Chell.

This incident occurred just one block away from where police encountered a group of men from a migrant shelter on January 27. In that incident, the police asked the group to move along, which resulted in a scuffle where nearly a dozen young men assaulted the officers as they were attempting to make an arrest. The NYPD Police Commissioner, Edward Caban, described the shooting as “way beyond reckless” during a news conference held on Friday.

“In the middle of the busiest, most highly-trafficked part of this city, a criminal with a firearm decided to pull the trigger,” Caban expressed. He also delivered a strong message, stating, “If you think you can attack a member of this department, if you think you can threaten the lives of the very people who keep us safe, if you think you can put others at deadly risk and get away with it, then think again.”

During the teenager’s arraignment, Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Coulson argued for him to be remanded, citing him as an extreme flight risk. Coulson emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating that the teenager had shot an innocent bystander in Times Square and also fired at the police officer who was attempting to arrest him. Furthermore, the authorities suspect the teenager’s involvement in two other incidents in New York City last month, including a gunpoint robbery in the Bronx and firing a gun on 45th Street and Broadway.

The teenager is expected to appear in court again on February 13. CNN has reached out to the teenager’s attorney for comment but has not received a response at the time of writing.

CNN’s Sabrina Shulman and Ashley R. Williams contributed to this report.
