Bob Moore, Founder of Bob’s Red Mill, Passes Away at 94

Bob Moore, the iconic bearded face behind the internationally renowned Bob’s Red Mill food products, sadly passed away on Saturday at the age of 94. His death marks the end of an era for the company he founded and nurtured for several decades.

Born in 1928, Bob Moore dedicated his life to promoting healthy eating habits and whole grain products. In 1978, together with his wife Charlie, he established Bob’s Red Mill. Their inspiration came from adopting a nutritious diet filled with whole grains for their own family.

Over the years, Bob’s Red Mill has grown into a thriving business, offering a wide variety of more than 200 products. From whole wheat flour to classic granola to grain-free brownie mixes, the company has become a staple in households across the world. Bob’s grandfatherly image, complete with his signature hat, glasses, white beard, and bolo tie, has become synonymous with the brand.

In a remarkable move in 2010, on his 81st birthday, Bob Moore transferred ownership of the company to his employees through an employee stock ownership plan. Today, more than 700 employees proudly own shares of the company in non-traded retirement accounts.

“I may have given them the company, but the boss part is still mine,” Moore humorously remarked in an interview with The Oregonian/OregonLive in 2010. His devotion and commitment to his employees were evident throughout his tenure as the company’s leader.

Bob Moore’s philanthropic efforts extended beyond the walls of his company. He and his wife made significant donations to educational organizations focused on nutritional health. They established the Moore Family Center for Whole Grain Foods, Nutrition, and Preventive Health at Oregon State University, as well as the Bob and Charlie Moore Institute for Nutrition and Wellness at Oregon Health & Science University.

Moore’s retirement in 2018 at the age of 89 allowed him to pass the torch to a new generation of leaders. Trey Winthrop, now the CEO of Bob’s Red Mill, expressed his gratitude for Moore’s guidance and vision. “He did everything in his power to leave us on a strong path forward,” Winthrop stated in a news release announcing Moore’s passing.

Bob Moore’s legacy will forever be remembered by the countless lives he touched through his dedication to promoting unprocessed foods and high-quality ingredients. His spirit will continue to guide the company and inspire future generations to prioritize healthy eating habits.

Bob Moore is survived by his three sons, Ken, Bob Jr., and David, as well as nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Details regarding a planned celebration of life will be announced in the near future.

The passing of Bob Moore marks the end of an era, but his impact on the world of healthy eating and whole grain products will undoubtedly endure. His vision and dedication will continue to shape the future of Bob’s Red Mill and inspire others to embrace a wholesome lifestyle.
