Padma 2024 Awardee Pandit Laxman Bhatt Tailang Passes Away Before Receiving Award
Even before he could receive the Padma Shri award announced by the government on the eve of January 26, Dhrupadacharya Pandit Laxman Bhatt Tailang, passed away at 9 am on Saturday.
Pandit Tailang, a renowned Dhrupad singer from Rajasthan, breathed his last at the age of 93 at Durlabhji Hospital in Jaipur. He had been undergoing treatment for pneumonia and other ailments over the past few days.
Pandit Tailang’s daughter, Professor Madhu Bhatt Tailang, shared that her father’s health had been deteriorating, leading to his admission at Durlabhji Hospital. Unfortunately, he passed away during his treatment on Saturday morning.
A Life Dedicated to Music
Pandit Tailang’s life was devoted to the art of singing. He not only pursued his passion but also imparted extensive music education to his children, including his son Ravi Shankar and daughters Shobha, Usha, Nisha, Madhu, Poonam, and Aarti, making them proficient in various genres.
Throughout his career, Pandit Tailang held notable positions in the field of music education. He served as a music lecturer at Banasthali Vidyapith from 1950 to 1992 and at the Rajasthan Music Institute, Jaipur from 1991 to 1994. Additionally, he founded and directed the ‘Rasmanjari Sangeetopasna Kendra’ in Jaipur in 1985 and the ‘International Dhrupad-Dham Trust’ in Jaipur in 2001.

Pandit Tailang’s contributions to the world of music, particularly in Dhrupad singing, were immense. His expertise and dedication earned him the prestigious Padma Shri award, a recognition that unfortunately arrived posthumously.
