Bob Moore, Founder of Bob’s Red Mill, Passes Away at 94

MILWAUKIE, Ore., Feb. 10, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Bob Moore, the founder of Bob’s Red Mill and a prominent figure in the natural foods industry, peacefully passed away at his home on Saturday, February 10, 2024. At the age of 94, Moore leaves behind a legacy as a visionary entrepreneur and a champion of whole grains.

A true pioneer, Moore’s journey into the world of healthy foods and milling whole grains began during his time as a parent. In 1978, he founded Bob’s Red Mill, initially serving the local community in Portland, Ore. However, the company quickly expanded and became a powerhouse in the natural foods market. Today, Bob’s Red Mill is a leading global food brand, offering over 200 products in more than 70 countries.

One of Moore’s greatest contributions was the establishment of the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) on his 81st birthday in 2010. This plan secured the company’s future by transferring ownership to the dedicated employees who helped Bob and his wife Charlee build and grow the business. Today, there are more than 700 employee owners who proudly carry on Moore’s legacy.

Bob’s Red Mill CEO, Trey Winthrop, expressed his gratitude for Moore’s leadership and commitment to unprocessed foods. Winthrop stated, “Bob’s legacy will live on forever in all of us who had the opportunity to work with him and is infused into the Bob’s Red Mill brand. We are motivated to preserve his old-world approach to pure, high-quality ingredients and his generosity towards employee owners and nutritional health organizations.”

Throughout the past decade, Moore and his late wife Charlee made significant financial contributions to Oregon universities, aiming to inspire future generations. Their donations to Oregon State University led to the establishment of the Moore Family Center for Whole Grain Foods, Nutrition, and Preventive Health in the College of Health and Human Sciences. The couple also played a crucial role in founding the Bob and Charlee Moore Institute for Nutrition & Wellness at Oregon Health & Science University, along with various other research programs across the state.

Bob Moore is survived by his three sons, Ken, Bob Jr., and David, along with their spouses, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. His family, along with the Bob’s Red Mill community, will always remember him as a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many.

A celebration of life service is currently being planned in honor of Moore. Further details will be announced in due course. In the meantime, locals and fans are encouraged to visit the Bob’s Red Mill Whole Grain Store in Milwaukie, Oregon, to share their memories and pay tribute to Bob.
