Increased Concerns Over Safety of Indian Community in the US

Washington, Feb 10 (PTI) – In a tragic incident, a 41-year-old Indian-origin IT executive, Vivek Taneja, has succumbed to his injuries after being assaulted outside a restaurant in the heart of Washington DC. This incident marks the seventh death of an Indian or Indian-American in the country in recent months, raising concerns over the safety of the Indian community residing in the United States.

Assault Occurred near the White House

The assault took place on February 2 in the 1100 block of 15th Street NW, which is just seven blocks away from the iconic White House. The police were alerted about the incident at 2 am and upon reaching the scene, they discovered Taneja with life-threatening injuries. He was immediately rushed to a trauma center, unconscious and with severe head injuries.

“On Wednesday, February 7, 2024, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead,” stated the Metropolitan Police, Washington DC, in a press release on Friday.

Police Releases Suspect Image and Announces Reward

The police have released a surveillance camera image of the suspect believed to be involved in the assault. To encourage the public to come forward with information, an award of up to USD 25,000 is being offered for any leads that result in the suspect’s arrest. However, no arrest has been made as of now.

According to the police report, Taneja was knocked to the ground by the suspect during an altercation at Shoto and Akedo, two sister Japanese restaurants in the Midtown Center building.

A Prominent IT Executive and Entrepreneur

Vivek Taneja was a highly accomplished individual in the IT industry. He was the co-founder and president of Dynamo Technologies, a leading provider of technology solutions and analytics products to the federal government. Taneja played a crucial role in driving Dynamo’s strategic growth and partnership initiatives, particularly in the federal government contracting arena.

With a background in systems engineering, Taneja led numerous technical consulting engagements across both the public and private sectors. He held a B.A. in Economics and Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Virginia, an M.S. in Telecommunications from George Mason University, and a D.Eng. in Engineering Management and Systems Engineering from George Washington University.

Increasing Attacks on Indian Students and Professionals

This incident adds to the growing list of attacks targeting the Indian community in the United States. Earlier this week, Syed Mazahir Ali, an Indian student, was attacked by robbers in Chicago. Similarly, 25-year-old Indian student Vivek Saini was fatally attacked in Lithonia city, Georgia, by a homeless drug addict. Another tragic incident involved the death of 19-year-old Shreyas Reddy Beniger, a student at the Lindner School of Business in Ohio. However, local authorities have ruled out foul play in that case.

Furthermore, Sameer Kamath, a 23-year-old Indian-American student at Purdue University, was found dead in a nature preserve in Indiana on February 5. Additionally, Neel Acharya, an Indian student at Purdue University in Indiana, was recently confirmed dead after being reported missing on January 28. The concerns surrounding the safety and security of the Indian community in the US continue to grow.

Akul B Dhawan, an 18-year-old student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, was also found dead last month, with signs indicating hypothermia as the cause of death.
