A Life Dedicated to Music
Born in 1935 in a Japan-occupied region of China, Seiji Ozawa’s passion for music began at a young age. He started his musical journey by studying piano, and his talent quickly became evident. After completing his education at Seijo Junior High School, Ozawa pursued his dreams further by studying conducting under the guidance of Hideo Saito at the esteemed Toho School of Music.
In 1959, Ozawa’s talent was recognized when he won first prize at the prestigious International Competition of Orchestra Conductors held in France. This remarkable achievement caught the attention of Charles Munch, the music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the time, who invited Ozawa to Tanglewood for the following summer.
Ozawa’s dedication to his craft led him to study under renowned conductors Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein.
