Marilyn K. Lewis

Marilyn K. Lewis, a beloved figure in the community known for her dedication to women’s rights and real estate sales, passed away on October 23 at the age of 81. She succumbed to complications from a stroke at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Rossville, where she had been receiving treatment.

Born in Sussex, New Jersey to Walter and Julie Lewis, Marilyn graduated from high school before attending Harford Community College. She began her career as an administrative assistant at the Army Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County, New Jersey, and later worked at Edgewood Arsenal in Aberdeen Proving Ground. After obtaining her real estate license, she relocated to Danbury, Connecticut. Eventually, Marilyn returned to Harford County, where she worked in real estate sales for various firms, ultimately retiring from Coldwell Banker in Bel Air around ten years ago.

A passionate advocate for women’s rights, Marilyn dedicated her retirement years to volunteering at various organizations, including the McFaul Activities Center, Anita C. Leight Estuary Center, and the Harford County Public Library and Harford County Public Schools. She also assisted a professor at Harford Community College in teaching English as a second language.

Throughout her life, Marilyn actively participated in political campaigns, supporting Democratic candidates and volunteering with the Harford County Board of Elections. She was also involved in philanthropic endeavors, supporting organizations such as WYPR and Planned Parenthood of Maryland.

A Life of Passion and Hobbies

Beyond her work and advocacy, Marilyn had a wide range of interests and hobbies. She was an avid fan of the Orioles and Ravens, and enjoyed attending community theater performances. Marilyn had a deep love for music and was a member of both the Upper Chesapeake Chorus, a women’s a cappella group, and the Sweet Adelines International, a women’s barbershop harmony group.

Her daughter, Julie M. Kichline, described Marilyn as a baritone and said that singing was one of her passions. Marilyn’s sense of humor, kindness, and dedication to social justice and human rights left a lasting impact on those who knew her.

Linda Brown, a close friend, wrote in an email, “Marilyn was my singing sister, my walking partner, my fellow Orioles fan, and my very dear friend. She had a wonderful sense of humor, was kind to everyone, but passionate about social justice and human rights. Marilyn touched my life in a significant way and I miss her every day.”

Vicki Walton, another longtime friend, shared, “Marilyn was a gift… one of my most precious gifts. Her friendship, guidance, humor, and kindness were felt by many. I hope I am able to follow her lead and be this person for someone else.”

A Lasting Legacy

Marilyn Lewis will always be remembered for her sense of humor, generosity, creativity, intelligence, loyalty, compassion, and giving nature. She was an extraordinary mother and friend who believed in putting others first and giving more than she took. Her philosophy will forever be her legacy.

In accordance with her wishes, Marilyn donated her body to the Anatomy Gift Registry. Plans for a celebration-of-life ceremony, to be held this spring, are currently underway.

Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Julie M. Kichline, her son, William H. Kichline III, two granddaughters, four great-grandchildren, and two nieces. Her marriage to William H. Kichline Jr. ended in divorce.
