The Spinners’ Last Surviving Original Member, Henry Fambrough, Dies at Age 85
Henry Fambrough, the last surviving original member of the iconic R&B group The Spinners, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 85. The news of his death was confirmed by a spokesperson for the group. Fambrough, along with his fellow band members, achieved great success with hits such as “It’s a Shame,” “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love,” and “The Rubberband Man.”
Fambrough died peacefully in his home in northern Virginia, due to natural causes, according to a statement released by spokesperson Tanisha Jackson.
The Spinners were honored with induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in November. Fambrough, along with Billy Henderson, Pervis Jackson, Bobby Smith, Philippé Wynne, and John Edwards, were recognized for their contributions to the music industry.
A Legendary Career in Music
Last May, Fambrough had the opportunity to visit Motown’s Studio A in Detroit as part of a special ceremony. During the event, the group donated 375 outfits worn by them during their performances to the Motown Museum. Reflecting on his long and successful career, Fambrough expressed his excitement about being in the studio where it all began. He fondly recalled the 1960s and the dreams he had of being a part of Motown.
One of The Spinners’ first big hits for Motown was “It’s A Shame,” which reached No. 14 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in 1970. The group later signed with Atlantic Records and continued to produce chart-topping songs. Their collaboration with Dionne Warwick on the song “Then Came You” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974.
Throughout their career, The Spinners received six Grammy Award nominations and achieved 18 platinum and gold albums.
