In a sad turn of events, William Joseph Demetree, affectionately known as Bill, passed away on December 30, 2023, at the age of 80. His peaceful departure took place at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Tampa, Florida.

A Life Well-Lived

Bill was born on October 10, 1943, and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. His family later moved to Pensacola, where he attended grade school, middle school, and high school. After completing his education, Bill pursued his passion for civil engineering at the esteemed Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) and graduated with a degree in the field.

Upon graduation, Bill joined the U.S. Army as a 1st lieutenant and served in Vietnam as a green beret in the special forces. He showed immense bravery and dedication, earning multiple medals for his service, including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Unfortunately, he was injured in combat, but his courageous actions will always be remembered.

A Love for St. Thomas

During his college summers, Bill worked on St. Thomas as a construction laborer, which sparked his lifelong love for the island. After being discharged from the Army, he made St. Thomas his permanent home. For over 50 years, Bill dedicated himself to the betterment and preservation of the island.

Bill’s contributions to the infrastructure of St. Thomas are numerous and impactful. Some notable projects include the Windward Passage Hotel, Antilles School, Bordeaux Housing Project, UVI Housing buildings, Nazareth School, and many more. His dedication to improving the island’s infrastructure was unwavering, and he always ensured that things were done with integrity and a sense of propriety.

A Force for Good

Bill’s legacy extends far beyond his professional accomplishments. He was known for his generosity, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. Whether it was supporting at-risk youth or assisting community members, Bill selflessly gave his time and resources without seeking recognition.

His commitment to serving others before himself was truly admirable. Bill’s impact on the St. Thomas community will be felt for generations to come, as he dedicated his life to enriching and preserving the island he loved so dearly.

A Lasting Tribute

On February 23, at 11 a.m., a burial service with Military Honors will be held for Bill at The Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. It will be a solemn occasion to honor his service and remember the incredible person he was.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to My Brother’s Workshop. This organization provides vocational training to at-risk youth, giving them the opportunity to become positive members of the St. Thomas community. It is a cause that Bill held dear to his heart, and supporting it would be a fitting tribute to his memory.

William Joseph Demetree leaves behind a lasting legacy of service, dedication, and kindness. He will be deeply missed by his loved ones, friends, and the entire St. Thomas community. May his soul rest in peace.
