Pearl Berg, a remarkable woman who held the title of being the ninth oldest person in the world, the third oldest person in the United States, and the oldest Jewish person, sadly passed away on Feb. 1 at her home in Los Angeles. At the time of her passing, she had reached the incredible age of 114 years old.

A Life Full of Love, Family, and Community

Pearl Berg was born on Oct. 1, 1909, in the city of Evansville, Indiana, to her loving parents Archie Synenberg and Annie Gerson. Growing up in Pittsburgh, she eventually moved with her family, which included her sister and brother, to the vibrant city of Los Angeles, where she would shape her remarkable life.

In 1931, Pearl married Mark Berg, a Jewish immigrant from Ukraine who made a living as an investor and businessman. Together, they built a beautiful life and were blessed with two sons, Dr. Alan Paul Berg and Robert Joel Berg.

A Life Well Lived

After the passing of her beloved husband in 1989, Pearl found solace and joy in various activities. She joined a book club, attended concerts and plays, and became an active member of a bridge group. The Gerontology Research Group, an organization that studies individuals who reach the impressive age of 110 and beyond, noted that Pearl continued to drive until her mid-90s, showcasing her independence and zest for life.

As a devoted member of the Sisterhood of Temple Israel of Hollywood, Pearl dedicated her time to writing heartfelt notes of condolence to bereaved families on behalf of the temple. She faithfully carried out this meaningful task until the remarkable age of 105, according to the GRC as reported in The Los Angeles Times.

A Commitment to Community and Heritage

Pearl Berg not only contributed to her local community but also actively supported various Jewish organizations. She was involved with the Nordea Chapter of Hadassah and continued to be a devoted member of the Sisterhood of Temple Israel of Hollywood. Additionally, Pearl held a deep love and unwavering support for the State of Israel.

Aside from her children, Pearl is survived by her beloved grandchild, Belinda Berg, who undoubtedly cherishes the memories and life lessons passed down by her remarkable grandmother.
