Detroit, UK – In a sad announcement, it has been confirmed that Henry Fambrough, the last surviving original member of the legendary R&B group The Spinners, has passed away at the age of 85. Fambrough’s hits with the group included chart-toppers such as “It’s a Shame,” “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love,” and “The Rubberband Man.”
According to a statement from group spokesperson Tanisha Jackson, Fambrough died peacefully of natural causes in his home in northern Virginia. The news of his passing has left fans and music lovers around the world mourning the loss of a true music icon.
The Spinners were recently honored by being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in November. Fambrough, along with fellow band members Billy Henderson, Pervis Jackson, Bobby Smith, Philippé Wynne, and John Edwards, were recognized for their immense contributions to the music industry.
Born and raised in Detroit, Fambrough had a deep passion for music from a young age. In 1954, he joined The Domingoes, which later became known as The Spinners. The group found their breakthrough when they signed with Motown Records in the 1960s.
Fambrough’s dedication and talent were evident throughout his career. He shared his love for Motown during a visit to Detroit’s Studio A last May, where he reflected on his early days in the music industry. He fondly remembered the countless hours spent rehearsing and recording in the iconic studio, even having to convince his wife about his late-night sessions.
The Spinners’ success continued to soar as they transitioned to Atlantic Records, where they produced a series of chart-topping hits. One of their most notable songs, “Then Came You,” featuring singer Dionne Warwick, reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974.
Throughout their career, The Spinners received six Grammy Award nominations and achieved an impressive 18 platinum and gold albums, solidifying their place in music history.
Fambrough is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Norma, and his daughter Heather Williams. His family, friends, and fans are left with a rich legacy of music that will continue to inspire generations to come.
