Former Lafayette Mayor William “Dud” Lastrapes, Jr. Passes Away at 94

LAFAYETTE, La. – Former Lafayette Mayor William “Dud” Lastrapes, Jr. has sadly passed away at the age of 94. His death occurred on Wednesday and has left the community mourning the loss of a beloved figure.

A Life of Service and Leadership

Dud Lastrapes dedicated much of his life to public service and leadership roles. From 1980 to 1992, he proudly served as the Mayor of Lafayette, completing three consecutive terms. Prior to his mayoral tenure, Lastrapes also contributed to the community as a Lafayette School Board member from 1972 to 1980.

During his time in office, Lastrapes achieved notable accomplishments that have left a lasting impact on Lafayette. One of his significant achievements was overseeing the opening of the Cajundome, a remarkable project valued at $64 million. Additionally, he recommended the initial plans for what would eventually become the iconic Camellia Bridge.

A Remarkable Journey

William “Dud” Lastrapes was born in New Orleans but grew up in Opelousas. He pursued higher education at Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. In 1951, he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in South Korea until 1953, serving his country with honor.

Following his military service, Lastrapes embarked on a career in journalism. He joined the newly opened KLFY-TV Channel 10 as a reporter and newscaster. Although he briefly explored radio, he ultimately returned to KLFY to assume the role of news director, a position he held until 1970.

The passing of William “Dud” Lastrapes leaves a void in the Lafayette community. His dedication to public service, leadership, and his significant contributions to the city will always be remembered. Lafayette has lost a true champion.
