Hsu Huang-yen, a highly acclaimed artist known for his intricate architectural models crafted inside glass bottles, has sadly passed away at the age of 88.
The news of Hsu’s death was confirmed by his children, who revealed that they have decided to donate their father’s extensive collection of over 100 artworks to his close friend and folklore expert, Liao Ta-yi.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Liao expressed his plans to organize free exhibitions of Hsu’s work as a tribute to the “determined, persevering spirit” that fueled his friend’s creations.
Hsu, a resident of Nantou’s Yuchi Township, began his artistic journey approximately two decades ago. He attributed his unique style to his previous work as a construction engineer involved in building tunnels at the Taiwan Power Co’s Mingtan Power Station.
Using only bamboo sticks and glue as his building materials, Hsu meticulously assembled detailed architectural models inside glass bottles. His creations included famous landmarks such as Taipei 101 and Kaohsiung’s 85 Sky Tower, as well as transmission towers, sailboats, and pagodas.
This intricate process required constant adjustments to the angle of the bottle, often resulting in a sore neck and eyes for Hsu. He revealed that the work demanded a state of mental calm and patience, making it impossible to proceed when frustrated or angry.
In an interview before his demise, Hsu humorously remarked that he had never encountered anyone attempting to imitate his art. He emphasized the importance of patience in sticking to such a craft.
Hsu’s children and close friend Liao Ta-yi have decided to honor his memory by sharing his extraordinary talent with the public. Through free exhibitions, they aim to showcase Hsu’s intricate creations and inspire others with his determined spirit.
