Tragedy Strikes as Five-Year-Old Boy Drowns at School’s Annual Sports Day

Mohammed Aahil

Hyderabad: In a heartbreaking turn of events, a five-year-old boy named Mohammed Aahil tragically lost his life during his school’s annual Sports Day celebrations. The incident occurred on Tuesday at the LB Stadium, when the young UKG student fell into a poorly-covered sump and drowned.

Aahil, a student at Success The School’s Tolichowki branch, was eagerly waiting to show his mother a certificate he had received after the celebrations concluded around 7 pm. However, tragedy struck when he accidentally fell into the sump.

The boy’s mother, Shafia Sultana, expressed her anguish recounting the incident. She had been waiting in the spectator area for Aahil, as her other son had already joined her. Upon hearing that her son had fallen into the sump, she rushed to the scene with the help of two individuals nearby, Muzammel and Mohammed Altaf.

With their assistance, Aahil was promptly pulled out of the sump. However, by that time, the young boy had fainted due to panic. Shafia Sultana, accompanied by Aahil’s aunt Farida Sultana and Mohammed Altaf, immediately arranged for transportation to a nearby hospital.

Unfortunately, due to locked stadium gates and uncooperative guards, there was a delay in reaching the hospital. When Aahil finally arrived at a private hospital in Basheerbagh, doctors declared him dead after examining him.

Investigation Reveals Negligence and Poor Safety Measures

Investigations into the incident have shed light on the negligence and poor safety measures that led to Aahil’s tragic death. The sump, which was supposed to be covered, had a weak top and was not secured properly. It had been filled with water to a depth of approximately four feet.

According to sources at the LB Stadium, sheets were placed on the sump only after the incident occurred. The school management, who were present at the event, failed to provide any assistance to Shafia Sultana during this trying time. In fact, upon learning of Aahil’s death, they fled the scene.

The police have since registered a case and are actively investigating the matter. Suresh Reddy, the sub-inspector of Saifabad police, stated that based on a complaint, they inspected the sump, which was over eight feet deep. Aahil likely fell through the fabric sheet covering the sump and drowned. The police have registered a case of death due to negligence under Section 304 (A) of the IPC.

A Loving Son Taken Too Soon

Mohammed Aahil was the youngest son of Shazia Sultana and Abdul Haji Ali, who works in the Middle East. His untimely demise has left his family and the community devastated.

Amjadullah Khan, a spokesman for the MBT, has demanded action against both the school management and the stadium for their negligence in properly covering the sump. He holds them responsible for this tragic and avoidable loss of an innocent child’s life.

Following a post-mortem examination on Wednesday, Aahil’s body was released to his family, and his final rites were performed.

As the investigation continues, it is crucial that safety measures in schools and public spaces are given the utmost importance to prevent any further tragedies like this from occurring.
