Joel Belz, Founder of World News Group, Passes Away at 82
Joel Belz, the founder of World News Group and a former moderator of the Presbyterian Church in America, has passed away at the age of 82. Belz’s death was a result of complications from Parkinson’s disease.
In a press release issued on Sunday, World announced the passing of Belz. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carol Esther, as well as five daughters, 16 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
John Weiss, chairman of the WNG board, described Belz as a leader, publisher, visionary, faithful servant of his Lord, and a friend and mentor to all. Weiss expressed that Belz’s words of encouragement will be greatly missed, but they take solace in knowing that Belz is now in his glorious reward.
Belz was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, in 1941. He graduated from Cono Christian School, Covenant College, and the University of Iowa. In 1977, Belz moved to Asheville, North Carolina, where he began working for the theologically conservative news publication The Presbyterian Journal.
During the 1980s, while still with the Journal, Belz founded a middle school news publication called It’s God’s World, later renamed God’s World News. This publication was praised by prison ministry leader Chuck Colson for its influence on a rising generation of Christians.
Belz’s passion for informing and shaping young minds led to the founding of World magazine in March 1986. The magazine aimed to provide an adult version of God’s World News, reaching a broader audience with its Christian worldview.
Belz was actively involved in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), attending annual meetings and serving as moderator for the denomination’s General Assembly in 2003.
After stepping down as CEO of World in 2005, Belz continued to contribute through writing approximately 1,000 columns. One of his notable pieces, “When politics is cover for coveting,” highlighted the dangers of materialism and the loss of moral values in society.
Joel Belz’s passing is a significant loss for the evangelical community. His dedication to providing Christian news and his influence on young minds will be remembered and cherished by many.
