Maurice Scrivener: A Legendary Figure in Suffolk Football

Few have contributed more to the beautiful game in our county than Maurice Scrivener, known to many as ‘Scrivey’ or ‘Mo’, who sadly passed away in January at the age of 75.

Mr. Scrivener’s passion for football was evident from a young age. As a child, he played as an amateur for Ipswich Town’s youth team in the Mercia League – the same team as Blues legends Mick Mills and Colin Viljoen.

Mr. Scrivener later went on to play for Whitton United, earning caps for England’s NABC and even scoring a hat-trick in one of his games against Scotland for Berwick Rangers FC. He later became the club’s secretary.

Throughout his career, Mr. Scrivener founded many teams and served in various roles such as secretary, manager, and chairman as required.

In the years 1998 to 2001, he served as the chairman of the Suffolk & Ipswich League and in later years, he worked for the Thurlow Nunn League as their registration secretary. He also served as the league’s referee appointing secretary.

Mr. Scrivener was highly respected and regarded as a fair and humorous match official. He brought a sense of fairness and good humor to every game he officiated.

Ian Smillie, Mr. Scrivener’s cousin and Suffolk FA’s Referee Appointment Officer for Saturday’s Adult County Cup competitions, described him as a “player’s referee” who did not suffer fools gladly.

“Maurice loved football and football loved him,” Smillie said. “There can be no greater testimony than this, and his death will be a huge loss for local and regional football.”

Richard Neal, the chief executive of Suffolk FA, also expressed his condolences and remembered Mr. Scrivener as a prominent figure in Suffolk football.

“Maurice was such a predominant figure in Suffolk football, having served as a referee for 35 years and held roles in the Suffolk & Ipswich League and the Thurlow Nunn Youth League,” Neal said. “We will sorely miss his enthusiasm, his commitment, and his joy in local football, but we will remember him fondly.”

Our thoughts and condolences go out to Mr. Scrivener’s family during this difficult time.
