The news of Montes’ passing was announced on February 5 by journalist Maria Luisa Valdes Doria. It was revealed that Montes had been battling cancer privately, away from the public eye, and the cause of her death was complications related to this illness.
Valdes Doria took to social media to share the heartbreaking news, writing, “Gina Montes, vedette, passed away on January 27 in New York at the age of 71, of cancer… rest in peace.”
Early Life and Rise to Fame
Born as Regina Ines Barbosa Govea in Brazil, Gina Montes was the daughter of Milsiño Govea Pereyra, a musician, and a comic theater actress. Her passion for dance was ignited by her parents, and by the age of 15, she had developed a stunning dancer’s physique through years of dedicated exercise.
In 1976, Montes and her sister Mimi made the decision to relocate to Mexico City in search of better opportunities in the entertainment industry. Unfortunately, their plans took a detour when their mother fell ill. While Mimi returned to Brazil to care for their mother, Montes remained in Mexico City to pursue her dreams.
Her breakthrough came in 1978, when Montes joined the cast of the immensely popular Televisa program, La Carabina de Ambrosio. Known for her striking exotic appearance, characterized by flashy wigs and daring outfits, Montes quickly became an iconic figure on the show. Despite her limited command of the Spanish language, she coined catchphrases like “Denankiu” that endeared her to the audience.
