Former Timmins Mayor Victor M. ‘Vic’ Power Passes Away at 89

Timmins, UK – Victor M. ‘Vic’ Power, the beloved former mayor of Timmins, passed away on Saturday at the age of 89. The City of Timmins announced his passing through a heartfelt post on its social media page. The news of his death has left the community in mourning.

Victor Power had a long and illustrious political career, serving as the mayor of Timmins for several terms beginning in 1980. He was widely regarded as the city’s longest-serving mayor, leaving behind a lasting impact on the community. His dedication and commitment to public service continue to shape Timmins to this day.

Power peacefully passed away at St. Mary’s Gardens Retirement Home, where he had been residing. His wife, Clarice, stood by his side throughout his remarkable journey.

Before his mayoral tenure, Power began his political career as a councillor for the former Town of Timmins in 1966. He served in this role for 14 years until Timmins amalgamated with surrounding townships and communities in 1973. Following the amalgamation, Power successfully ran for mayor in 1980 and served for eight years. Although he experienced a defeat in 1988, he made a triumphant return to the mayor’s seat in 1991 and continued to serve until his retirement in 2000. However, he couldn’t stay away from politics for long and returned for one final term as mayor from 2003 to 2006.

Power’s contributions extended beyond the realm of politics. As a councillor, he played a vital role in the construction of the Archie Dillon Sportsplex, a beloved recreational facility in Timmins. He also dedicated his time to organizations like the Porcupine United Way and served on the Timmins Police Services Board. Power’s commitment to the prosperity and sustainability of his community was unwavering.

Throughout his career, Power received numerous honors and accolades. In recognition of his dedication, the Timmins airport was renamed the Timmins Victor M. Power Airport in 2007. Power’s contributions at both local and regional levels earned him a place in the prestigious Order of Canada in 2009.

News of Power’s passing has prompted an outpouring of fond memories and condolences from fellow politicians and community members. Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus expressed his sorrow at the loss of a true gentleman and praised Power’s love for the north.

The public is invited to pay their respects to the late mayor through a book of condolence. City officials, including Mayor Michelle Boileau and members of the city council, will sign the book on Tuesday, with public signing available starting on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at city hall.

Victor M. ‘Vic’ Power’s legacy as a dedicated public servant and visionary leader will continue to inspire the people of Timmins. The community will forever be grateful for his contributions and the impact he made during his time as mayor.

Rest in peace, Victor M. ‘Vic’ Power.
