DJ Katapila, the Ghanaian producer and disc jockey known for his innovative albums and marathon sets, passed away on Sunday, January 28, after a brief illness. The news was reported by Awesome Tapes From Africa, the label that helped bring Katapila’s music to an international audience. He was 50 years old.

Born Ishmael Abbey in Accra’s Jamestown neighborhood, DJ Katapila began his career as a DJ for funeral parties before transitioning into production in his mid-30s. He gained recognition for his unique style, which blended early house and techno influences with rhythms and vocals from Ghanaian dance music. Katapila’s tracks often featured him speaking and singing in Twi, English, and Ga, accompanied by skillful live drum pad performances.

During his career, DJ Katapila released three records on the label Awesome Tapes From Africa, starting with his debut album Trotro. His final EP, Techno Africa, was released in 2022 on Club Yeke.
