Barry John, Welsh Rugby Great, Passes Away at 79

CARDIFF, Wales — Barry John, the legendary rugby player who represented Wales in 25 games and played a pivotal role in the British and Irish Lions’ historic series victory over New Zealand in 1971, has passed away at the age of 79.

John’s family released a statement to British media announcing his peaceful passing in the hospital on Sunday.

A Rugby Superstar and a National Hero

Barry John was renowned for his exceptional skills as a flyhalf and is widely regarded as rugby’s first superstar. He made his debut for Wales in 1966 and quickly formed a formidable partnership with scrumhalf Gareth Edwards, which proved to be a winning combination for both their country and the Lions.

Throughout his international career, John played alongside Edwards in 23 matches for Wales. He also played all five test matches for the Lions, including one against South Africa in 1968 and four against New Zealand in 1971, where the Lions emerged victorious with a 2-1 series win against the All Blacks.

During the New Zealand tour, local journalists bestowed upon John the nickname “The King,” a testament to his exceptional talent and impact on the game.

A Legacy on and off the Field

In addition to his international achievements, Barry John played for Llanelli and Cardiff in club rugby, leaving an indelible mark on both teams. His family expressed their grief and shared, “Barry John died peacefully today at the University Hospital of Wales surrounded by his loving wife and four children. He was a loving dad to his 11 grandchildren and much-loved brother.”

The news of John’s passing has devastated Cardiff, who described him as an “absolute icon.” The club paid tribute to him, saying, “Long live the King.”

The Lions, on their official account on X, formerly Twitter, acknowledged John’s immense contribution to the sport, stating that he “inspired so many and will forever be remembered for how much he gave to the sport.”

A Loss Felt by the Rugby Community

Barry John’s passing comes just four weeks after the death of another Wales rugby legend, JPR Williams.

As the rugby community mourns the loss of these two greats, their legacies and contributions to the sport will be forever cherished and remembered.
