Namibia’s President Hage Geingob Dies at 82

Namibia’s President Hage Geingob, 82, passed away early Sunday, according to an announcement from the presidency. The news comes just weeks after he had been diagnosed with cancer, although the exact cause of death has not been disclosed.

Geingob had been leading the sparsely populated and mostly arid southern African country since 2015, the same year he revealed his triumph over prostate cancer. In 2007, Geingob assumed the role of vice president for the governing South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), the party he had joined when Namibia was still known as South West Africa. Geingob passionately advocated for the eradication of past injustices and the promotion of shared prosperity in Namibia. In a speech commemorating Namibia’s independence, he expressed the need to break the chains of historical injustices. Prior to assuming the presidency, Geingob served as the Minister of Trade and Industry. In 2012, he was appointed prime minister once again. His popularity was evident in the 2014 election, where he secured 87% of the vote. However, he narrowly avoided a runoff in a subsequent poll held in November 2019, following a government bribery scandal.

The bribery scandal involved allegations of officials granting fishing quotas to Iceland’s largest fishing company in exchange for kickbacks. The ensuing public outcry led to the resignation of two ministers. Geingob acknowledged the need for wealth distribution, particularly to address the concentration of wealth among Namibia’s white minority.
