Aston Barrett, Bassist for Bob Marley and the Wailers, Dies at 77

February 3, 2024

Aston Barrett, the renowned bassist for Bob Marley and the Wailers, passed away on Saturday at the age of 77. The sad news was shared by Jamaica’s minister of culture, Hon. Olivia “Babsy” Grange, through a series of tweets on X (formerly Twitter). Grange expressed her deep regret at the passing of Aston Francis Barrett, CD, affectionately known as “Family Man” or “Fams”.

Barrett, along with his brother Carlton, was part of both Bob Marley and the Wailers and Lee Scratch Perry and the Upsetters during the early years of Reggae Music. As a bass player, keyboardist, and guitarist, Barrett played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of Jamaican music. He was not only a pioneer but also a mentor to many Jamaican artists and musicians, including the renowned “Riddim Twins,” Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare.

Barrett passed away at the University of Miami Hospital in Florida, United States. He was a true legend of Jamaican music and his loss is deeply felt by both the local and international Reggae Music fraternity. As we commemorate Reggae Month 2024, let us take a moment to express our sincere condolences to his wife, children, relatives, and all those who were touched by his music. May the Angels welcome Aston “Family Man” Barrett to Mount Zion.

A Musical Journey and Fatherhood

Aston Barrett was born on November 22, 1946, in Kingston, Jamaica. His love for music began at a young age, and he built his first guitar out of plywood and a curtain rod. Before achieving success as a musician, Barrett worked as a bike mechanic. He played with several bands before being introduced to Bob Marley.

Once Barrett became a member of Bob Marley and the Wailers, he played a vital role in the band’s success. He contributed greatly by writing most of the bass lines for the reggae legend. His talent and dedication to his craft made him an integral part of the band’s sound.

Aside from his musical achievements, Barrett was also known for his large family. In an interview with the BBC in 2013, he humorously mentioned having 23 daughters and 18 sons, totaling 41 children. He also proudly shared that he had 23 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A Legal Battle for Royalties

Following Bob Marley’s untimely death in 1981, Barrett played a significant role in steering the band forward. However, his relationship with the Marley family became strained due to a legal battle over royalties. In 2006, Barrett sued Island Records and the Marley family, claiming he was owed royalties for his contributions to three albums: “Babylon by Bus,” “Natty Dread,” and “Rastaman Vibration.”

Unfortunately, Barrett’s lawsuit was dismissed by Justice Lewison, who sided with Marley’s family. They argued that Barrett and his brother were viewed as backing session musicians and not entitled to the royalties he claimed. This was the third lawsuit Barrett had filed against the family, with previous attempts in 1986 and 1989.

Aston Barrett’s musical legacy will forever be remembered and cherished. He played a significant role in shaping the sound of reggae music and influenced countless artists. His contributions to Bob Marley and the Wailers will always be celebrated, and his impact on the genre will continue to resonate for generations to come.

Rest in peace, Aston “Family Man” Barrett.
