Man Accused of Shooting at Uttar Pradesh Police Sub Inspector Dies in Encounter
Meerut, Feb 4 – In a tragic incident, a man accused of shooting at a Uttar Pradesh Police Sub Inspector during a robbery bid has died of bullet wounds sustained in an encounter with the police in Meerut on Saturday.
Background and Robbery Bid
According to Meerut Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rohit Singh Sajwan, the deceased, identified as Vinay Verma, was involved in a robbery where he and his associates stole a car on January 22 from an area under Kankarkheda Police Station.
Thanks to the GPS installed in the vehicle, the police were able to track down the robbers and began chasing them. During the chase, the car robbers opened fire at the police and wounded police outpost in-charge Munesh Kumar in the chest.
Kumar was immediately admitted to a hospital and is currently recovering from the gunshot wound.
Identification and Arrest
With the help of CCTV cameras, the police were able to identify the robbers as Vinay Verma, Anuj, and Naresh Sagar. On Saturday evening, Verma and Sagar were arrested while planning to flee to Agra by bus.
During the interrogation, Verma confessed that he was the one who had shot at the police. He was then taken to the location where he had hidden the weapon used in the incident.
Attempted Escape and Police Firing
While at the spot, Verma made an attempt to escape from police custody and shot at a constable in his arm. The police immediately surrounded Verma and retaliated by shooting at him.
Verma sustained serious injuries from the police firing and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries during the course of treatment.
Previous Criminal Record
According to SSP Sajwan, Vinay Verma had a long history of criminal activities. More than six cases of attempted murder, robbery, Gangster Act, and theft were registered against Verma at various police stations in the district.
As of now, the cause of death has not been determined.
