During the Korean War, Murray served as a conscientious objector and volunteered for the Brethren Volunteer Service, a precursor to the Peace Corps. He spent time in German and Italian refugee camps before returning to the U.S. in 1955.

In 1956, Murray made his film debut at the age of 26 in “Bus Stop,” starring alongside Marilyn Monroe. The movie earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the 29th Academy Awards. Although he didn’t win the award, his performance received critical acclaim.

Throughout his career, Murray worked with notable actors and appeared in various films, including “Shake Hands With the Devil” (1959) with James Cagney and “One Man’s Way” (1964), where he portrayed Norman Vincent Peale.

In addition to his acting career, Murray also had success behind the camera. He co-wrote and directed “The Cross and the Switchblade” (1970), a true-life drama starring Pat Boone, which marked the screen debut of Erik Estrada.

Murray’s final on-screen appearance was in the 2021 Western film “Promise.”
