Fred Ames, a Royal Marines Commando who fought in Italy during World War Two, has passed away at the age of 100. He died on January 22nd at the Lucerne House Care Home in Alphington, Exeter.

Born in Exeter, Fred celebrated his 100th birthday in July of last year. He joined the Royal Marines at the age of 18 in 1942 and later became a military policeman at Yettington in Devon. Throughout his life, Fred held various jobs, including being a bus conductor and driver, as well as a hospital porter.

Fred was a beloved father of two, grandfather of four, and great grandfather of three. He met his late wife Marion in a forces club canteen in Exeter, and they were married in 1947. Fred often joked that the secret to a long marriage was saying “yes dear,” but also emphasized the importance of both partners having a voice in the relationship.

During his time in the war, Fred saw action in Italy and the south of France after D-Day. He vividly recalled his experiences, stating, “It was no different to anyone else, nothing too exciting. We boarded small motor boats for a night crossing to Palermo in Sicily where we joined forces with the American 5th Army. We then moved on to mainland Italy where I fired my first shots in anger, or more likely fear, in the Battle of Anzio. The Germans soon brought in Panzers [German tank division] and other crack troops which made life more difficult.”

In his later years, Fred enjoyed spending time with his family and cherishing the memories he had created with his late wife Marion. His son Richard Ames described his passing as peaceful and short. The family plans to hold a funeral at Ide Church, which will also serve as a memorial for Marion, who passed away during the Covid-19 pandemic and was unable to have the life celebration she deserved.

Fred’s passing is a reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who fought in World War Two. His service to his country will always be honored and remembered.

In conclusion, Fred Ames, a Royal Marines Commando and war veteran, has passed away at the age of 100. He served his country with bravery and dedication during World War Two, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his loved ones. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time..
