Government Breaking Laws by Failing to Follow Asylum Process

In a recent tweet, Marilyn Relva-Papcun expressed her concern over the government’s handling of individuals seeking asylum. She pointed out that instead of following the established process, the government is sending asylum seekers to countries that are thousands of miles away. This raises questions about the government’s commitment to upholding the law.

It is crucial to understand the asylum process and how it should work. When someone seeks asylum, they are fleeing their home country due to persecution or fear of harm. According to international law, individuals have the right to seek asylum in the nearest safe country. This principle, known as non-refoulement, ensures that people in need of protection are not turned away.

However, it seems that the government is not adhering to this principle. By sending asylum seekers to countries that are far away, they are violating the established norms. This raises concerns about the government’s commitment to human rights and the rule of law.

The Consequences of Breaking the Law

When a government fails to follow the law, it sets a dangerous precedent. It undermines the trust of its citizens and erodes the foundation of a just society. If the government can pick and choose which laws to follow, then what is the point of having laws in the first place?

Moreover, by sending asylum seekers to countries that are not the nearest safe option, the government is putting these individuals at risk. They may face further persecution or even danger on their journey to the designated country. This not only violates their rights but also goes against the spirit of compassion and humanity that should guide our actions.

Understanding the Root Causes

In order to address this issue, it is essential to understand why the government is deviating from the established asylum process. It could be due to various factors, such as political considerations, resource limitations, or a lack of understanding of international law.

By delving deeper into these root causes, we can find solutions that ensure the government upholds the law while also addressing any underlying challenges. This could involve providing more resources and support to the designated countries, improving education and awareness about international law, or engaging in diplomatic efforts to address political concerns.

A Call for Accountability

As concerned citizens, it is our responsibility to hold our government accountable for its actions. We must demand transparency and clarity regarding the decision-making process when it comes to asylum seekers. By raising awareness and engaging in constructive dialogue, we can push for change and ensure that the government follows the established laws.

Ultimately, the government’s failure to follow the asylum process is a serious concern. It not only undermines the rule of law but also puts vulnerable individuals at risk. By understanding the root causes and holding the government accountable, we can work towards a more just and compassionate society.

People seeking asylum are supposed to go to the next country not one a million miles away. That's just one …. They are not following the current ones!
