Lehigh County Judge Robert K. Young, a prominent figure in the legal community and active member of the community, has sadly passed away at the age of 92. He had been residing at Willow Nursing Home in Lower Macungie Township for the last seven months before his death, as confirmed by his eldest son, Don Young. Born and raised in Macungie, Young spent the majority of his life in Upper Milford Township, where he made a significant impact.
A Distinguished Legal Career
Young was a respected and accomplished lawyer when he was nominated by Pennsylvania Gov. Dick Thornburgh in 1984 to fill a vacancy on the Lehigh County bench. The following year, he was elected to a full 10-year term and served as the head of Orphans Court. During his time on the bench, Young was known for his dedication to justice and fairness.
Continued Advocacy
Although Young retired in 1995, he remained an active member of the legal community. One notable case he pursued was questioning the nonprofit status of Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN). In a 2016 ruling, a county judge ruled in favor of LVHN, but Young’s petition successfully prompted the health network to explain its charitable giving policies before the Orphans Court, which has jurisdiction over nonprofits.
Don Young, reflecting on his father’s work, stated, “The hospital case became his marker, but his time on the bench was much more rounded than that.” Young’s impact extended beyond the nonprofit case, as he handled various Orphans Court cases involving guardianships, adoptions, and estates.
Community Involvement
In addition to his legal career, Young was actively involved in the local community. He served as the president of the Lehigh County Bar Association and held solicitor positions for Macungie, Upper Milford Township, Lehigh Career & Technical Institute, and Lehigh Carbon Community College. Young also dedicated his time to the Macungie Memorial Park Association, where he served as a volunteer board member and president.
One of Young’s notable contributions was his involvement with the popular classic and antique car show, Das Awkscht Fescht, held annually in Macungie. He served as a volunteer and chair of the event, which drew enthusiasts from all over.
A Well-Rounded Individual
Beyond his legal and community contributions, Young led a fulfilling personal life. After retiring from the bench, he wrote a memoir titled “Job Description: Trial Judge” that offered insights into his time on the court. He was also a private pilot and even converted a gas-powered pickup truck to run on battery power. Young enjoyed organizing canoe trips with friends and family, creating lasting memories.
Remembering a Remarkable Life
Robert K. Young is survived by his wife, Carolyn, their five children, 11 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. His interment will be private, with arrangements handled by Schmoyer Funeral Home in Breinigsville. The family has requested that memorial donations be made to Macungie Memorial Park.
