Former Ahmedabad Mayor and gynaecologist, Dr Mukul Shah, passed away on Sunday due to a heart ailment. He was 74 years old. Dr Shah breathed his last at his residence in Ahmedabad at around 8.30 pm. Earlier in the day, he had undergone angiography at a hospital, as stated by Gaurang Prajapati, a BJP leader in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Saddened by the demise of Dr Mukul Shah. He will always be remembered for his efforts in the development of the city as its mayor and for his contributions towards quality education. Prayers for the peace of the departed soul and condolences to his family.”
During his 12-year tenure as a municipal councillor, Dr Shah achieved several milestones. He was the youngest individual to hold the top three positions of deputy mayor (1988 and 1989), standing committee chairman (1990), and mayor (1991 and 1992) at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). He was initially elected in 1980. Additionally, Dr Shah served as the pro-vice-chancellor of Gujarat University in 2011 and as the vice-chancellor from 2012 to 2014.
Dr Shah not only excelled in his political career but also made significant contributions in the field of medicine. He was the first practising doctor to be appointed as the mayor and held the position of professor and department head at GCS Medical College. Furthermore, he served as a registrar at NHL Medical College in Ahmedabad, director of the National Forensic Science University in 2017, and Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Amarkantak.
Having completed his MBBS and MD in obstetrics and gynaecology, Dr Shah also served as a professor at AMC-run NHL Medical College and LG Hospital. He gained recognition as the youngest vice-president elected to the Ahmedabad Medical Association. His family members describe him as a highly respected individual with a candid personality. His wife, Dr Dipti Shah, currently holds the position of dean at Narendra Modi Medical College in Ahmedabad.
The last respects for Dr Shah will be paid on Thursday at the University Convention Centre GMDC Ground. We are yet to receive information regarding the cause of his death.
