Background and Biography

A beloved figure in the Allegheny Valley, Emilio “Chummy” Saldari, has sadly passed away at the age of 99. Born and raised in Springdale Township, Saldari attended Springdale High School before being drafted to serve in World War II in 1943. He bravely fought in several major battles, including the Battle of the Bulge, and was honored with four Bronze Stars, campaign medals, and the prestigious Chevalier Award from the French government.

After returning home, Saldari dedicated his life to serving his community. He worked at Edgewater Steel in Oakmont and the Harmar and Harwick mines, while also representing the United Mine Workers of America. A Life of Service and Love

Saldari was not only known for his bravery and dedication to his country but also for his kindness and warm personality. His daughter, Carolyn Saldari Bengel, fondly remembers him as a larger-than-life figure who saw the good in everybody. His nickname, “Chummy,” was earned at a young age when he would greet everyone he passed on his way to school. This friendly nature stuck with him throughout his life, as he continued to bring smiles to the faces of all who knew him.

Despite the challenges he faced, Saldari never lost his sense of humor. It took him 75 years to finally receive his high school diploma, which he was surprised with during the Allegheny Valley School District’s Hall of Fame induction in 2019. This milestone was a source of joy and laughter for Saldari and his loved ones.

A Legacy of Education and Inspiration

As he grew older, Saldari began to open up about his experiences during the war. He became passionate about educating younger generations, speaking at elementary schools and colleges to share his firsthand accounts and teach the importance of freedom. His message was simple but powerful: “Freedom isn’t free.”

Alongside his commitment to his country, Saldari’s faith, family, and community were the cornerstones of his life. He was married to his beloved wife, Ida, for over 76 years, and their strong bond was evident to all who knew them. Saldari’s selflessness and concern for others were unwavering, as he continuously put the needs of his community before his own.
