Chattanooga Native and Medal of Honor Recipient Larry Taylor Passes Away

Chattanooga native and brave war veteran, Larry Taylor, passed away on January 28, 2024, at the age of 81, according to an announcement made by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. Taylor, who resided in Signal Mountain, is survived by his loving wife Toni and other family members.

A Heroic Journey during the Vietnam War

Larry Taylor gained national recognition last year when President Joe Biden presented him with the prestigious Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the United States, during a moving ceremony at the White House. Taylor served as a Cobra helicopter commander during the Vietnam War, showcasing exceptional bravery and gallantry.

President Biden, in his tribute to Taylor, praised his outstanding courage and selflessness, stating, “1st Lt. Taylor’s conspicuous gallantry, his profound concern for his fellow soldiers, and his intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.”

The Chattanooga community paid tribute to Taylor’s remarkable achievements by organizing a special parade and ceremony in his honor.

A Daring Rescue Mission

In 1968, Taylor and his co-pilot embarked on a daring mission to assist a four-man patrol team under enemy attack. Despite heavy gunfire, Taylor fearlessly fired multiple rockets and machine gun rounds at the enemy, providing cover for the patrol team. As their ammunition began to run low, Taylor employed a clever strategy, executing fake gun runs to divert the attention of the enemy. He then skillfully landed the helicopter amidst the chaos, rescuing the four Americans, including Gerald Patty of Maryville.

Though the helicopter was not designed for passengers, the team managed to climb on board, sitting wherever they could, even on rocket-pods and skids. Taylor expertly piloted the helicopter to safety, saving the lives of his comrades.

Awarded the Medal of Honor

For his incredible heroism, Taylor was previously awarded the Silver Star. However, upon further examination of his actions, his award was upgraded to the prestigious Medal of Honor, rightfully recognizing his extraordinary bravery and selflessness.

A Life of Service and Achievements

Born and raised in Chattanooga, Larry Taylor attended Chattanooga High School before pursuing higher education at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. During his time at UT, he excelled as an ROTC captain, vice president of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, and actively participated in music and fine arts programs. Taylor’s dedication to service extended beyond his military career, as he ran a successful roofing and sheet metal company in Chattanooga after leaving active duty.

Throughout his life, Taylor remained actively engaged in veterans’ organizations, his church, and supported various nonprofits in the Chattanooga area. His selfless contributions were recognized with honors such as the Bronze Star, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, numerous Air Medals, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Bronze Star.

A Lasting Legacy

With his passing, Larry Taylor joins the ranks of the esteemed Medal of Honor recipients. Today, there are 63 living recipients who have been awarded this distinguished honor.

Larry Taylor’s unwavering bravery and devotion to duty will be remembered as an inspiration to future generations. His legacy serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by our brave men and women in uniform.
