Sandra Milo, Iconic Italian Actress, Passes Away at 90

Sandra Milo, a renowned actress in Italian cinema who played a pivotal role in Federico Fellini’s masterpiece “8 1/2” and later became his muse, has sadly passed away at the age of 90. The news of her demise was confirmed by her family on Monday. The beloved actress, known for her distinctive high-pitched voice, peacefully passed away in her sleep at her home in Rome, surrounded by her family and her beloved dogs, Jim and Lady.

A Versatile Talent in Comedy and Drama

Milo, born Elena Salvatrice Greco, made her breakthrough in Roberto Rossellini’s 1959 film “Il generale Della Rovere (General Della Rovere).” Throughout her career, she collaborated with some of the greatest talents of Italy’s post-war film industry, including Alberto Sordi and Marcello Mastroianni. Milo’s most memorable role came in Fellini’s acclaimed film “8 1/2,” where she portrayed Carla, the mistress of Mastroianni’s film director Guido.

Her collaboration with Fellini continued in the 1965 film “Juliet of the Spirits,” where she shared the screen with Fellini’s own wife. In her book “Caro Federico,” which was indirectly autobiographical, Milo revealed their secret love affair that spanned 17 years.

A Prank Gone Wrong

Aside from her successful film career, Milo also became a familiar face on Italian television as a talk show host. However, in 1990, she became the victim of a tasteless prank that would go down in Italian television history. During one of her shows on RAI, a prankster called in and falsely informed her that her son, Ciro, had been involved in a serious car accident and was hospitalized. Distraught, Milo frantically left the studio, sobbing and calling out for her son. It was later revealed that the call was a cruel hoax, leaving Milo shaken but relieved to discover that her son was safe. She is survived by Ciro and her two other children, as stated in the family’s statement released through RAI.

A Lasting Legacy

Sandra Milo leaves behind a lasting legacy in Italian cinema and television. Her remarkable talent and versatility as an actress earned her the admiration of audiences and critics alike. Her contributions to Fellini’s films will forever be remembered, as she played an integral part in bringing his visions to life on the silver screen.

As news of Milo’s passing spread, tributes poured in from all corners of the entertainment industry. The Venice Biennale paid homage to the iconic actress, referring to her as an “unforgettable and versatile” actor in both comedy and drama. Milo’s impact on Italian cinema will continue to inspire future generations of actors and filmmakers.

The world of Italian cinema mourns the loss of Sandra Milo, a true icon whose talent and charm will be remembered for years to come.
