“A leopard aged between 13-15 was found dead at the Amagarh forest reserve. Prima facie, it seems the leopard died due to infighting as it had injury marks on the head and neck. A postmortem was conducted, and then the leopard was cremated,” said an official.

Background of the Deceased Leopard

In February 2023, the state government declared the Jhalana-Amagarh reserve forest as a conservation reserve (CR). This reserve is situated in the middle of Jaipur and is home to more than 40 adult leopards.

Spread across 3,507.17 hectares, the Amagarh reserve forest is the 21st conservation reserve in Rajasthan. It is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act (WPA) of 1972, making it mandatory for planners of development projects within the area to obtain clearance under the Forest Conservation Act, 1990, as well as the approval of the State Board of Wildlife (SBWL) and National Board for Wildlife (NBWL).

After a census conducted in 2022, the forest department reported that the number of leopards in the Jhalana-Amagarh forest reserve had increased to 40 from 28 in 2019.

Cause of Death

The leopard’s cause of death was determined to be infighting, as it had visible injury marks on its head and neck. Infighting among leopards is not uncommon, especially during territorial disputes or mating season.

The postmortem examination confirmed the presence of these injuries, leading officials to conclude that the leopard’s death was a result of the infighting. Following the postmortem, the leopard was respectfully cremated.

Conservation Efforts

The declaration of the Jhalana-Amagarh reserve forest as a conservation reserve reflects the government’s commitment to protecting wildlife and their habitats. This designation ensures that any development projects within the area undergo thorough scrutiny and obtain necessary clearances, preventing undue harm to the ecosystem.

With the increase in the leopard population within the reserve, it is evident that these conservation efforts have been successful. However, incidents like the recent death serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by wildlife in their natural habitats.

Conclusion

The death of the leopard at the Amagarh reserve forest due to infighting is a tragic incident. It highlights the importance of conservation efforts and the need to protect wildlife habitats.

As we mourn the loss of this magnificent creature, it is crucial to continue working towards creating a harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife. Through increased awareness, conservation measures, and responsible actions, we can ensure the survival and well-being of these incredible animals for generations to come.

Final Words: Let us remember the leopard and the role it played in the delicate balance of nature. May its untimely demise serve as a call to action for the preservation of our wildlife and their habitats.
