Shawna Trpcic, the talented costume designer known for her work on popular Star Wars series such as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka, has tragically passed away at the age of 56. The news of her sudden demise was confirmed by her daughter, Sarah, who revealed that the cause of death remains unknown. The Hollywood Reporter broke the heartbreaking news, leaving fans and colleagues shocked and saddened by the loss.

Shawna Trpcic was a highly regarded figure in Hollywood, particularly in the realm of science fiction costume design. Her unique creativity, collaborative spirit, and delightful personality made her a beloved member of the Star Wars/Lucasfilm family, as well as the wider community of costume designers and the Costume Designers Guild. Born on October 18, 1966, in Artesia, California, Trpcic initially aspired to be a truck driver during her high school years. However, her path took a turn when an art teacher inspired her to pursue a career as an artist. She enrolled at Otis College of Art and Design to study fashion and even had the opportunity to work with Bob Mackie’s team during her senior year. Trpcic’s talent and dedication led to her first costume designer credit in 1990, marking the beginning of a remarkable career.

A Respected Career in Costume Design

In 2019, Trpcic began her regular collaboration with Lucasfilm, starting with season two of The Mandalorian. She continued her exceptional work on The Book of Boba Fett and, most recently, Ahsoka. Alongside her contributions to the Star Wars universe, Trpcic’s impressive list of credits includes projects such as The Ballad of John St. George, Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein, Carry Tiger To Mountain, Revival, Witches of East End, The Cabin in the Woods, This Is the End, Firefly, Angel, K-Ville, Torchwood, Husbands, Lust for Love, and Dollhouse.

Trpcic’s deep love and appreciation for Star Wars were evident in her every piece of work. Her costumes told stories, offering glimpses into the lives and experiences of the characters before the cameras started rolling. Her creative vision and attention to detail were greatly admired by her collaborators. Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni expressed his admiration for her work, stating that she had always been a part of the Star Wars family. Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian, also emphasized Trpcic’s immense contribution in bringing the world to life.

Shawna Trpcic’s talent and dedication were recognized through various accolades. She received Emmy nominations for her exceptional costume designs in The Mandalorian, Boba Fett, and season three of The Mandalorian. Additionally, she won a Costume Designers Guild Award for her remarkable work on Boba Fett.

Speaking in an interview with Gold Derby in August, Trpcic shared her love for the science-fiction genre and the freedom it offered in terms of creativity. For her, the challenge of creating something out of nothing was incredible, and she particularly enjoyed building entire worlds within the Star Wars universe. From establishing caste systems to designing believable societies on different planets, Trpcic’s passion and imagination were evident in every project she undertook.

Shawna Trpcic is survived by her children, Sarah and Joseph. The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with the expenses during this difficult time.
