Bengali Actor Sreela Majumdar, Beloved by Many Directors, Dies at 65

In a sad turn of events, noted Bengali actor Sreela Majumdar passed away at her Kolkata residence on Saturday, according to her family. She was 65 years old and had been battling cancer for the past three years. The news of her demise has left the film industry in mourning.

She appeared in notable films such as Shyam Benegal’s “Mandi” (Market Place, 1983), Prakash Jha’s “Damul” (Bonded Until death, 1985), and Utpalendu Chakraborty’s “Chokh” (Eye, 1983). Her versatility and talent were evident in the range of roles she portrayed on screen.

Throughout her career, Sreela Majumdar worked in a total of 43 films. She was also known for her sensitive voice dubbing for Aishwarya Rai in the film “Chokher Bali” (A Passion Play, 2003), directed by Rituparno Ghosh. Her last appearance was in the movie “Palan” by Kaushik Ganguly, which served as a sequel to “Ekdin Pratidin.” The film received widespread critical acclaim last year.
