Gus Hendrickson, the esteemed coach who led Grand Rapids to victory in the 1975 Minnesota state high school hockey championship, passed away on Thursday at the age of 83.

A Legacy of Success

Hendrickson will be remembered as the mastermind behind the 1974-75 Grand Rapids team, which boasted an impressive record of 23-4. In the title game, they triumphed over Minneapolis Southwest with a commanding 6-1 victory. This exceptional team included 11 players who went on to play at Division I level, including renowned former Gophers coach Don Lucia and Bill Baker, a member of the 1980 Miracle on Ice team. Other notable players on the team included John Rothstein, Dan Lempe, and Peter DeCenzo.

A Journey Rooted in Passion

Hendrickson’s love for hockey began during his time as a player for Eveleth, a school known for its powerhouse hockey program under the guidance of legendary coach Cliff Thompson. After his high school days, Hendrickson continued his hockey career at Michigan State University, where he honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of the game.

From Coach to Bulldog

Following Grand Rapids’ triumphant state title win, Hendrickson was appointed as head coach at the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1975. He led the Bulldogs for seven seasons, showcasing his coaching prowess and leaving a lasting impact on the program. Throughout his tenure, Hendrickson amassed a record of 110-146-11, instilling a sense of discipline and determination in his players. In 1982, he passed the torch to his longtime assistant, Mike Sertich.

The funeral services for Hendrickson, a proud U.S. Army veteran, will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in his hometown of Grand Rapids. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., allowing friends, family, and the community to pay their respects to a man who touched the lives of many through his coaching and leadership.
