Geoff Lockwood: A Tribute to a Visionary Leader

Geoff Lockwood

Geoff Lockwood, one of the founding fathers of Sussex University and former chief executive of the West Pier Trust, has sadly passed away at the age of 87. His contributions to both institutions were immeasurable, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A Life Dedicated to Education and Heritage

Geoff Lockwood began his journey at Sussex University in 1961 when he joined the administrative team at Knoyle Hall. A year later, he witnessed the official opening of the Falmer campus, marking the beginning of a long and illustrious career.

His dedication and commitment led him to succeed Ted Shields as the university registrar and secretary in 1973. Mr. Lockwood served in this role until his retirement in 1996, during which he worked closely with the first five vice-chancellors and the first three chancellors.

Throughout his tenure, Geoff Lockwood earned a substantial national and international reputation, leaving an indelible mark on the university and its community.

A Champion for the West Pier

Geoff Lockwood’s passion for his local community extended beyond the realm of education. He was also a key figure at the West Pier Trust, where he served as the chief executive and board member.

The West Pier Trust, in a heartfelt tribute, expressed their sadness at the loss of Mr. Lockwood. They highlighted his instrumental role in the period between 1995 and 2009, during which the full restoration of the pier became a possibility.

Geoff Lockwood’s efforts were pivotal in securing Heritage Lottery funding of over £15 million, which would have safeguarded the pier’s future. However, the devastating arson attacks of 2003 dashed these hopes, leading to the withdrawal of the funding offer.

Despite this setback, Geoff Lockwood remained dedicated to the West Pier Trust, stepping down as chief executive in 2009 but continuing to serve on the board until July 2016.

A Remarkable Man on and off the Court

Geoff Lockwood’s achievements extended beyond his professional life. He was an excellent sportsman, known for his regular appearances on the squash court well into his seventies.

Described as a great family man, Geoff always acknowledged the vital role his wife Helena played in building a close-knit community during the early days of the university. He was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren.

The passing of Geoff Lockwood leaves a void in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. His contributions to education, heritage, and community will be remembered fondly, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
