Brian Perkins: Remembering a Passionate Wine Connoisseur
Brian Perkins, a lifelong New Orleanian and graduate of Joseph S. Clark High School, passed away on January 18 at the age of 55. His sister, Terrell Perkins, has revealed that he died at his New Orleans home due to complications of gastroparesis, a stomach affliction. Perkins was known for his immense knowledge and passion for wines, which earned him international recognition as a wine connoisseur.
A Talented Photographer and Wine Salesman
Perkins initially found his way into the world of wines while working at Martin Wine Cellar. It was there that a colleague recognized his potential and encouraged him to pursue a career in sales. With a natural charm and ability to connect with people, Perkins quickly excelled in his new role. He became a chameleon, adapting to different customers’ interests and making them feel comfortable in his presence.
Aside from his love for wines, Perkins also had a talent for photography. His sister recalls how he picked up a camera and developed his skills, never ceasing to capture moments through his lens.
Expanding Knowledge and Building Networks
As Perkins’ knowledge of wines grew, he developed a particular interest in South African wines. This passion led him to secure the necessary backing to import them. He also worked as the market manager for Louisiana and Arkansas at Moët Hennessy, a prestigious wine and spirits division of LVMH, specializing in luxury goods.
A Career Filled with Success
In 2010, Perkins took on the role of restaurant manager and wine director at Galatoire’s Restaurant. Six years later, he joined forces with Ric Hopper, the wine manager at Martin Wine Cellar, who had opened his own establishment called Hopper’s Carte des Vins. Perkins’ career continued to thrive until his health problems began to surface, eventually leading to his departure.
Despite making a living through wine, Perkins always saw it as a source of pleasure and enjoyment. To him, wine was fun and an avenue for exploration and connection.
Remembering Brian Perkins
Brian Perkins is survived by his sister, Terrell Perkins, and his brother, Jerry Perkins III. A funeral will be held on February 3 at 1 p.m. at Charbonnet-Labat-Glapion Funeral Home, located at 1615 St. Philip St. Visitation will begin at noon.
Perkins’ untimely passing leaves behind a legacy of passion, knowledge, and an ability to connect with others. His contributions to the wine industry and his impact on those around him will not be forgotten.
