At the tender age of 3, Joel began playing the diatonic accordion, following in his brother’s footsteps. By the age of 6, he had already made his first appearance on the radio. A prodigious talent, Joel recorded his first Cajun music track at the age of 11. The Cajun music genre is rooted in the heritage of French Canadians exiled from their homeland in Arcadia (now Nova Scotia) during the mid-1700s.
Despite facing the challenge of growing up in a French-speaking household, Joel overcame the language barrier and his own social awkwardness associated with his autism. Accompanying his father to morning engagements at a local radio station in Crowley, Louisiana, Joel embraced the English-speaking world around him.
