Mrs. Mosekola Adegoke, who slipped into a coma recently due to the administration of wrong medications by a nurse at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), has tragically passed away at the age of 59. Her son-in-law, Mr. Tunde Awosedo, confirmed her death on Wednesday.

This devastating incident was first brought to light by Mrs. Damilola Awosedo, Mrs. Adegoke’s daughter, in a report published by Law & Society on January 20, 2024. The report detailed how negligence by a nurse, who administered anesthesia instead of antibiotics after a successful surgery, caused Mrs. Adegoke to slip into a coma while in the recovery process. Mrs. Awosedo also highlighted the hospital’s lack of duty of care and their attempts to sweep the incident under the rug.

In response to media reports, the management of LASUTH announced that they were conducting an investigation into the allegations of wrong medication administration due to negligence. They assured the family that the findings of the investigation would be made public. Professor Adebowale Adekoya, the Director of Clinical Services and Training at LASUTH, intervened by promising that the hospital would cover all expenses related to Mrs. Adegoke’s intensive care treatment.

On January 21, 2024, LASUTH released a statement on social media titled “LASUTH IS INVESTIGATING THE ALLEGATION OF WRONG MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION.” The statement emphasized that there would be no cover-up and any staff found guilty would face administrative consequences. LASUTH also clarified that Mrs. Adegoke was receiving free intensive care treatment and that all efforts were being made to ensure her well-being.

However, Mr. Tunde Awosedo disputed LASUTH’s claims, stating that the family had spent almost N1,000,000 on Mrs. Adegoke’s treatment between January 16 and January 21. He called out the hospital management for distorting information and accused them of inaction.

The original report from January 20, 2024, recounted the events leading up to Mrs. Adegoke’s coma. She was scheduled for an adrenal mass surgery in October 2023 at LASUTH. However, the surgery was repeatedly rescheduled, causing frustration and anxiety for Mrs. Adegoke and her family. Eventually, on January 11, 2024, the surgery took place, but complications arose when a blood vessel was mistakenly punctured, causing excessive bleeding and cardiac arrest. Despite these challenges, Mrs. Adegoke recovered quickly and was set to be discharged on January 17.

Tragically, on the night of January 16, a nurse administered the wrong medication to Mrs. Adegoke. Instead of antibiotics, she was given an overdose of an anesthesia called Vecuronium. This mistake caused her to experience difficulty breathing and seizures, leading to her being rushed back to the ICU. The injection was not part of her prescribed medications, and the hospital failed to provide an explanation as to how it ended up in the regular ward.

Since this incident, Mrs. Adegoke has been in a coma, with doctors giving her a 50/50 chance of recovery. The family is calling for accountability from LASUTH and urging the Lagos State Government and the public to support them in seeking justice.

This tragic case highlights the importance of proper medical care and the devastating consequences that can occur due to negligence. The family of Mrs. Adegoke is now left to mourn the loss of their beloved mother and seek answers regarding the circumstances that led to her untimely death..
