Former Cobb County Manager David Hankerson Passes Away After a Long Illness

In a sad turn of events, Cobb County government announced the passing of former County Manager David Hankerson today. Hankerson, who had been battling a long illness, leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service and leadership.

A Man of Integrity and Dedication

David Hankerson served as the Cobb County manager from February 1, 1993, until his departure in June of 2017. Prior to his appointment as county manager, he had been the community development manager since 1984. Hankerson’s humble beginnings on his father’s farm in Waynesboro, Georgia, instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance.

During his tenure as county manager, Hankerson achieved numerous accomplishments that benefited the community. One notable project under his leadership was the construction of the East West Connector, which greatly improved transportation in the area.

Fondly Remembered by Colleagues and Community

County Manager Dr. Jackie McMorris expressed her gratitude for Hankerson’s guidance and mentorship, stating, “But for Mr. Hankerson, I would not be where I am today. His core values of integrity, honesty, and hard work continue to resonate in Cobb County. He was a true giant in our community, and his legacy will live on in all of us.”

Chairwoman Lisa Cupid also spoke highly of Hankerson, emphasizing his unmatched leadership and service. She credited him with providing invaluable support during her time as a district commissioner and expressed her condolences to his family and the Cobb community.

Mike Terry, former chairman of the Cobb County Planning Commission, shared a heartfelt statement about Hankerson’s character and influence. Terry recounted how Hankerson would often drop in unannounced before public hearings to express his gratitude for everyone’s hard work and offer his assistance if needed. Terry expressed his gratitude for their friendship and guidance.

A Life of Achievement and Service

David Hankerson’s dedication to public service extended beyond his role as county manager. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy from Fort Valley State College and a Juris Doctorate from the Woodrow Wilson College of Law. Hankerson served in the U.S. Army’s Signal Corps in Seoul, Korea, from 1967 to 1970 and later worked as a district conservationist for the United States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service.

Throughout his career, Hankerson actively participated in various civic and professional organizations. He was a Leadership Cobb Alumnus, a graduate of the Regional Leadership Institute, and a member of the Marietta Kiwanis Club. He also served on numerous boards and received several awards for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the community.

Despite his numerous accolades, Hankerson remained humble and dedicated to serving others. His impact on Cobb County will be remembered for years to come.
