Macy Alexander, a beloved and highly regarded drag performer in the Carolinas and the southeast, sadly passed away on Monday, January 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the age of 58. She had a successful career that spanned from Charlotte to Atlanta and various points in between. Over the years, she performed at events such as Charlotte Pride and in clubs like 313 in Raleigh, Chasers and Scorpio in Charlotte, and Pulse Ultra Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Born Jerry Lee Dimmery on March 9, 1965, in Mullins, South Carolina, Alexander took her stage name from the renowned North Carolina drag diva Brandi Alexander and drew inspiration from another drag legend, Tina Devore from Atlanta. Both of these performers, who were Macy’s drag mothers, had passed away prior to her.

According to the website ourcommunityroots.com, Alexander held numerous titles throughout her career, including Miss South Carolina USofA 2011, Miss North Carolina Continental Elite 2010, Miss Gay Gastonia 2008, Miss Gay Charlotte USofA 2008, Miss Gay South Carolina United States 2006, Miss Charlotte Pride 2005, and Miss Gay Capital City America, among others.

In an interview with Qnotes, Jason Arnold, Macy’s partner of over 20 years, spoke about their life together and Macy’s impact on the drag community. Arnold fondly recalled meeting Macy on October 30, 2001, and described him as one of the nicest and kindest people he had ever met.

Arnold further shared that Macy had a significant impact on many drag queens he worked with, despite facing challenges and unfair treatment at times. Macy never spoke ill of others or engaged in gossip, always choosing to be a friend and stand up for fellow performers when others wouldn’t. Additionally, Macy frequently gave away costumes and accessories to other performers and provided temporary living arrangements for those in need.

In the week leading up to her passing, Macy expressed her desire for her friends and fans to have a fun and nostalgic time during her memorial service, urging them to “Party like it’s 1969!” This sentiment was shared on Facebook.

To honor Macy’s memory, friends and fellow performers Kiana Lane, Tiffany Storm, and Essence will host a special memorial celebration with performances on February 4 at 9 p.m. at Chasers in the North Davidson area of Charlotte.
