Born on July 13, 1932, in the small village of Springfield, West Virginia, Dan Wagoner grew up as a small-town Appalachian kid. The idea of going to New York City was like “going to the moon” for him. However, it was in New York that he built an extraordinary career as a dancer and choreographer during the late 1950s.
Wagoner’s dance journey began when he joined the Martha Graham Dance Company in 1957. He performed with the company until 1962, with a brief return in 1968. During his time with Martha Graham, Wagoner also had the opportunity to dance with other influential figures in American modern dance, including Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham.
From 1960 to 1968, Wagoner danced in Paul Taylor’s troupe, showcasing his solid and unique style of movement. In 1969, he established his own dance group, Dan Wagoner and Dancers, which he led for an impressive 25 years.
Critics have praised Wagoner’s originality and energy in his work. Anna Kisselgoff, a critic for The New York Times, described him as a master of original invention and unexpected movement.
