Delilah, one of the oldest gorillas in the world, has sadly passed away at Belfast Zoo. This iconic gorilla, who previously captivated audiences on the show Animal Magic with Johnny Morris, had been a beloved resident at the zoo for an impressive 32 years. Her recent demise comes just months after the zoo celebrated her 60th birthday, marking a truly remarkable milestone.

A Life Well-Lived

In her later years, Delilah required special care and attention. She had been on a specialized diet and received baby porridge with her medication each morning. The veterinary and keeping teams at Belfast Zoo worked tirelessly to ensure that any health issues were promptly addressed. They maintained close contact with the keepers and provided Delilah with enrichment activities and interactions to keep her active and fit. This dedication played a crucial role in ensuring that Delilah lived a long and happy life.

Cause of Death

Unfortunately, Delilah recently developed a chest infection, which led to a decline in her overall condition. In order to prevent further suffering, the difficult decision was made to euthanize her. The entire team at Belfast Zoo is deeply saddened by her loss. Delilah was not only a character but also held a special place in the hearts of both keepers and visitors alike.

A Beloved Figure

Over the years, visitors to the zoo delighted in watching Delilah play with the young gorillas and witnessed her surprising agility as she climbed to the highest point of the frame. She arrived at Belfast Zoo in 1992 and played a pivotal role in establishing the first gorilla group at the zoo. Prior to her time at the zoo, Delilah charmed the nation on the hit show Animal Magic with Johnny Morris, raising awareness about the Western Lowland Gorilla and educating the public about this remarkable species.

Conservation Status

It is important to note that Western Lowland Gorillas, like Delilah, are listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Their population is rapidly declining due to habitat destruction, poaching, and disease.

A Fond Farewell

Julie Mansell, the zoo curator, fondly remembers Delilah as a character who had been a prominent figure at Belfast Zoo for many years. Delilah had a mischievous side and enjoyed engaging in playful tussles with the younger gorillas. Despite her occasional grumpy moments, anyone who had the privilege of working with her quickly grew fond of her. While her passing was expected due to her advanced age, it remains a difficult time for everyone who was involved in Delilah’s life at Belfast Zoo.

Delilah’s legacy will live on, as her story continues to inspire visitors to the zoo and raise awareness about the importance of conservation efforts for endangered wildlife. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will forever be cherished.
